The annual migration of wildebeests and zebras is essentially the movement of thousands of animals across the plains of East Africa in search of food and water when the season changes. Although there is neither a beginning nor an end, we usually say that the migration goes from the Serengeti plains towards the northwest, towards the famous Maasai Mara reserve. The exact timing and route of migration varies each year depending on the rainfall.

Annual rains arrive in the Serengeti in January or February, allowing female wildebeests to give birth. By March or April the area has dried up and become desolate, so the large mass of animals is forced to move north towards Lake Victoria where the mating season begins. Then, they go to the Maasai Mara in June or July, and this is when most people come to enjoy this magnificent experience of seeing thousands of animals galloping across the plains and the torrential rivers, full of crocodiles waiting!
